Chapter Sixteen
I called Ava the second I got back to my house last night after being at Juneâs. Sheâd left me a half dozen messages, each one progressively more belligerent, entitled and possessive. I was right that at first she wanted a ride to the party. Eventually, she wanted me at the party. Mostly, she didnât like not knowing where I was. When I called, she was her typical buzzed-at-a-party self. I told her I didnât want to do whatever she and I were doing anymore, and when she asked if I wanted more, I wasnât very nice.
I said, âYes, but not with you.â
She hung up.
I texted her an apology and told her she deserves better. She told me to fuck off.
When my phone buzzed at a decent hour this morning, I figured she was still hungover and angry-texting or wanting to complete our usual cycle of break-up then get back together. It wasnât Ava, though. It was Tory.
My friend must have taken it easy last night. Over the summer, I could basically set my alarm to noon the day after a party and still have hours on my own before Tory rolled out of bed hungover and hungry. This morningâs message didnât even come equipped with a vomiting emoji, his signature post-party icon.
TORY: Bowling?
Dare I say, Tory is maturing.
I find myself ensnared in a strange set of obstacles now that my relationship with June has . . . shifted. I need to dissect basic questions and normal tasks, constantly asking myself whether June will be present and how Iâd behave if I didnât know how her mouth tastes.
Thatâs how I dealt with the bowling text. I didnât lie. I wrote back: I hate bowling.
I mostly do, though Iâm decent at it. But I love pool. And I want to see June, desperately. I played to my strengths and somehow managed to not spark a million needling questions from my best friend on our way to Eight Lanes.
Abbyâs sitting at the counter when we walk in, and it helps keep my nerves in check seeing Tory get rattled. His crush on Juneâs best friend has elevated. Thereâs something different about the way he is with her and around her. And itâs more than him liking the chase or hating her constant rejection. Maybe thatâs my ticket to getting him off my back about June. Every time he brings her up, Iâll counter with a question about Abby.
âMaybe Mabee, whatâs up?â
June pops up from behind the counter, her eyes wide and darting to take in her new customers. I offer a one-sided smirk in apology for surprising her, but before she can speak, Toryâs reaching over the counter and hugging her. My smile drops and I feel that tightness in my gut. Itâs fucking jealousy. Her eyes find mine over Toryâs shoulder, and I swear sheâs telling me with her gaze to calm down.
âNice game Friday, Luc,â Abby says while she and June exchange glances. She winks at her friend. Did
